Introduction to Ski Touring Weekend
Ready to take your skiing beyond the lifts and discover the world of ski touring? Join us for a weekend in Grindelwald, at the foot of the Eiger, for a hands-on introduction to ski touring.
Led by Dan Moore, international mountain guide, this course is designed for confident piste skiers who want to learn how to move uphill, explore untracked terrain, and experience the mountains in a more adventurous and self-powered way, all with expert guidance and a strong focus on safety.
This weekend is a practical introduction to ski touring, combining learning, adventure and a unique overnight stay in the mountains at Berggasthaus Waldspitz.
We meet at 10:00 at the Grindelwald Firstbahn station, equipped with our ski touring gear. After checking equipment and a short briefing, we use the lifts to gain height before starting our first tour.
Over the weekend, you’ll learn the fundamentals of ski touring while exploring beautiful terrain that Dan knows exceptionally well. The day ends with a tour to Berggasthaus Waldspitz, where we enjoy dinner and rest before another rewarding day in the mountains.
The second day focuses on consolidating skills, planning a tour, and enjoying a longer route with plenty of opportunities to practice both uphill technique and off-piste descents, before returning to the valley in the afternoon.
Objectives of the weekend:
- Introduction to ski touring equipment and transitions
- Learn efficient uphill technique (kick turns, track setting)
- Basic tour planning and route choice
- Avalanche awareness and training
- Improve off-piste skiing in variable snow
- Gain confidence to join or plan easy ski tours in the future
- Enjoy a true mountain experience with an overnight hut stay
Requirements to join the event:
- Confident parallel turns on all red and black pistes
- Comfortable skiing off-piste in variable snow
- Good fitness for full days in the mountains
- No previous ski touring experience required
