Guided Hiking Weekend (S-Charl – Sesvenna Hut – Mals)
This weekend hike connects the picturesque S-Charl in Lower Engadine to its South Tyrolean counterpart, Mals.
Of course, this hike won’t keep you in the valley! Starting from the charming village of S-Charl, you’ll ascend to the breathtaking Fuorcla Sesvenna and spend the night in the Sesvenna mountain hut. Along the way, you’ll cross a high pass, walk past alpine lakes, and, if lucky, catch a glimpse of bearded vultures and ibex. This two-day journey showcases some of the most stunning landscapes in the Alps.
This event is led by Otto Van Andel, international mountain leader.
What's the plan?
Saturday, 5th October
Otto will meet you at S'charl final stop bus at 12:15.From here, the path takes us up nearly 1,000 meters to the Fuorcla Sesvenna, one of Switzerland's highest hiking passes at over 2,800 meters. Keep an eye out for the resident ibex colony and the elusive bearded vultures. Crossing the border into Italy, we’ll pass serene mountain lakes before arriving at the Sesvenna hut for the night.
Approx. 4.5 hours | Distance: ~11 km | Elevation gain: 1,005 m | Elevation loss: 550 m
Sunday, 6th October
The trail winds down through quaint alpine pastures into the warm Vinschgau valley. This day’s hike is a steady descent along easy paths, taking you through the region’s first orchards before reaching the valley floor. We’ll pass by the Marienberg Abbey and the village of Burgeis, concluding our hike in Mals. Here, we’ll enjoy some late summer weather with ice cream and pizza before heading home.
